Pembroke Welsh Corgis are one of two separate and distinct Corgi breeds recognized by the AKC.
The Pembroke has in its ancestry the Keeshound, Schipperke, Pomeranian, Samoyed, Chow-Chow, Norwegian Elkhound, and Finnish Spitz: It has little or nothing of Dauhshund characterisitcs like the Cardigan.
Corgis are approximately 12" tall and weigh between 25-30 pounds. And only come in four AKC approved colors: Black and Tan, Fawn, Red, and Sable, all with white markings!
Typically PWC's have a thick double coat, but most show quality PWC's are carriers for a "fluff" gene. If we breed two carriers together we have a 25% chance of getting a "fluffy" corgi! These dogs have a longer single coat, similar to an Australian Shepherd. While this is considered a fault for showing, they make fantastic pets and have extremely soft fur!
Corgis are absolutely fantastic with Children when properly socialized, we are very careful to begin that socialization at a young age and when you get your Corgi from us you are well on your way to a wonderfully socialized companion!
Corgis are natural born Herding dogs so they will chase and bark at anything that moves whether that is a ball, a cow, or a child. While this is a natural instinct, it is important that your Corgi gets basic obedience training so you can create the perfect companion for your family!
At DWC we understand that health testing is one of the most confusing parts of selecting the correct breeder and pet for your family. It's important to understand that health problems are not unique to purebred dogs, but we do know more about the health problems of purebred dogs because of the diligence and testing done by the breeders who truly love their breed and their dogs. As breeders, when we health test, sometimes we are trying to eliminate a known problem, sometimes we are just trying to prevent future problems, and other times it is simply one more piece of information for you to have about your dog!
Each breed has certain tests that are considered common, and some breeders may not do any testing at all (beware!), some do the basics, and others do more, usually due to them having dealt with that particular problem in the past and wanting to avoid doing so in the future. Additional testing is not always better, for example we could absolutely test PWC's for Hereditary nasal parakeratosis (A disease that affects Labrador Retrievers and related breeds and leads to dry, rough, discolored crusts on the edges of the dog’s nose), but as this mutation has never been seen in PWC dogs it isn't really telling you anything for us tell you your dog tests clear for it. It is important to understand which health issues are common in your chosen breed and read up on them, information is power!
Fortunately, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a relatively healthy breed with just a few main health concerns. Many breeders will have their corgis tested for hip dysplasia (OFA Hip Screening), eye disorders (CAER Exam) and von Willebrand disease (vWD); Other tests we often perform are Coat Length gene testing (Fluffy), Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC), and Degenerative Myelopathy (DM).
